I stayed at this hotel with my family for Chinese New Year from Jan 27th-29th, as we were visiting relatives in Penang during that time. This was our first time staying at this particular hotel and our expectations were relatively high, in view that this was given a 5-star rating.

Here are some observations from our 3D/2N stay:

Pros:

  • We stayed in a suite room and was pleased that it was very spacious
  • The King Size bed had a nice mattress that wasn’t too hard with plenty of feather pillows
  • The bathroom came equipped with a built-in closet, a working safe, a large bathtub (enough to fit two ppl) with a jacuzzi function and a separate shower booth
  • The view from the room was splendid, with the sight of the entire coastline of Gurney Drive and the ocean.
  • The walls in the room was thick enough to allow for our privacy
  • The hotel benefits from a very good staff line-up. Most of the ones we encountered had very good manners and were always ready with a smile.

Cons:

  • The check-in process needs to be improved. While we came early for our check in, it was regrettable that after waiting for 40 minutes-1 hour for the rooms to be ready, it was not fully cleaned for us.
  • Upon checking in to the first room, we found a pungent smell coming from the carpet, which we deemed as vomit from the previous occupant.
  • We had to check and re-check for our second room, of which after only going to the front desk to enquire, it was learned that the concierge had slipped the keys underneath the door of the second LOCKED room. That was most embarrassing to say the least. We were promptly provided with a third key however, to allow us entry.
  • The parking spaces were limited in the basement areas, with very dodgy metal ramps for a parking lot. If the screws did not hold or were too rusty, your car would end up crushed at the bottom of the building.
  • The coffee house was often very disorganized, with many of the staff struggling to meet the needs of so many guests (it was a full-house for the hotel).
  • The tap water in the bathroom was not entirely clean. We discovered after a long bubble bath, that there was sand residue left over in the tub after draining. Ugh.
  • The hotel ran out of blankets and ended up combining two single-bed comforters to place in the suite room king-size bed.

Nit-picking:

  • The flowers used in the lobby area were all fake. Not very impressive
  • There was no complimentary water bottles for us to drink upon arriving in the room (this came only later)
  • Much of the furniture were old and needed an upgrade
  • The layout of the rooms were not well done, with the television completely out-of-place between the bed and the sofa
  • Not all the safes were working. The safe in the first room was not functioning
  • The hotel does not meet the required standards of a 5-star establishment, as it only has 2-3 restaurants. All 5-star hotels need at least 5 restaurants to deserve the title
  • The line-up for the breakfast was not great, but sufficient. Then again, you’re in Penang, why bother eating hotel food?

Overall, the cons outweigh the pros and while I really did love the view from the rooms, I doubt I will return again. But for all travelers who are desperate for a room, this is good enough for a good night’s rest, in view that most would be spending their time outdoors rather than inside the hotel.

My ratings: 5/10

u1584p28t3d2027831f326dt20080515120757I stumbled upon this movie by accident when I saw that my father was watching a movie at home one evening. I got hooked seeing some of the scenes showing in the film so I ended up sitting on the sofa across from him and finishing the show.

How will I describe this movie? Very interesting. Haha, when I use the word “interesting,” you know that I’m undecided on my vote for it.

I was persuaded to watch because:

  • Xun Zhou-I HAD to see what she had to bring to the table. I have had my eye on this actress since watching her act beside Daniel Wu in The Banquet (one of my favourite films)
  • The storyline-I am extremely interested Chinese folk stories. So since this movie is based primarily on one such story, I was too curious to see the adaptation to pass up such an opportunity
  • Special Effects-I wanted to see what Gordon Chan will do for this movie. Afterall, if it was a supernatural movie, it will require a certain level of graphics to make it believable. I thought this movie did justice in a lot of levels and I certainly liked it. It might not be a “crouching tiger, hidden dragon” level, but good enough.

I can go on and on, but I will keep it short this round.

This movie is basically a love story. It’s probably more appreciated by the ladies but if the guy is dragged into viewing this film, at least they will be compensated with the action scenes.

My ratings:

Screenwriting & storyline: 7/10

Acting: 6/10

Cinematography & set: 5/10

Overall: 6/10

Music Review: Phoenix Rising January 13, 2009

Many thanks to Monica Williams for approaching me in the first place, to do this music review.

Introducing Phoenix Rising, a contemporary new age music band based from San Francisco, United States-it is a group that creates a very unique sound that bears heavy influence from Asia.

The tracks “Seed” and “Creation” seems to borrow themes from East Asia & South Asia with the Chinese woodwind instrument and the Indian drums. It was a surprise when I listened to them both for the first time, although I have to admit that I highly enjoyed the piano accompaniment in “Seed.” That was a nice modern touch.

Key highlights:

  • Music is often quite melancholic and utilizes a lot of flute/woodwind instrument in its tunes
  • The piano plays the biggest anchor in most of the pieces, providing the overall melody and direction
  • Lots of experimentation-one of the good things about Indie music or an up & coming band is to hear the raw sounds they produce. It provides an excellent avenue for the building of something new

Some comments for Phoenix:

  • While the new age sound is a movement that has been around in the industry, it take a degree of appreciation to enjoy this kind of music. Artistes like Enya managed to gather a loyal following to achieve success in the 1990’s because of her soulful vocals and original lyrics.
  • While experimentation is good, it might come to a point where a band or an artist might want to consider creating an original sound, an original trademark, to create a differentiation point to stand out. This is something Phoenix may want to consider creating
  • Add percussions-this will add layers to the music you create and have a better dynamic to it
  • If a piece can hold together with merely one instrument, such as the piano alone, then do that. Sometimes adding too many accompaniments can kill the essence of the song
  • Adding vocals can be a turning point. Something to consider? But only if you have worthwhile lyrics to share to an audience

Overall, I enjoyed the piece “Ma’s Hands” the most. Mainly because I am primarily a jazz fan and I highly enjoyed this piece. But I’m biased in that degree, of course.

Ratings:

Originality: 7/10

Musical arrangement: 6/10

Recommended for new age and contemporary music fans.
